Educational Assistance

A cancer diagnosis may result in a child not being able to attend school for a period of time. CCA recognises the challenges that this may create for children and thus has developed the Home Tutor Scheme to support children who are unable to attend school. Additionally, CCA wishes to recognise the hardship that young people with a childhood cancer have had to face; through the provision of the Garrick Scholarship Fund CCA hopes to encourage young people to undertake further studies and/or personal development activities.

Home Tutor Scheme

The Home Tutor Scheme (HTS) provides home based educational support for school aged children who are currently receiving treatment for cancer and are unable to attend school as a result of their diagnosis. The HTS is fully funded by the Childhood Cancer Association.

  • As a result of treatment, children often miss substantial periods of formal schooling
  • Established in 1989, the HTS was developed to provide support by delivering one-on-one tutoring for as long as required by each individual child
  • The educational support provided by the HTS aims to help maintain and/or continue children's education, ensuring the smoothest transition possible back to school
  • The HTS will reimburse the cost of one hour maximum of tutoring per week
  • The Home Tutor Scheme is administered by the Children's Hospital School, in conjunction with the Women's & Children's Hospital on behalf of the Childhood Cancer Association

Who can access the Home Tutor Scheme?
School aged children who have been diagnosed with cancer and who are:

  • Unable to attend school due to intensive treatment demands and/or because of their immuno-suppressed status
  • Receiving palliative care and as such are unable to attend school

How are children referred?

  • Referrals are to be completed by their Doctor, Psychologist or WCH Social Worker
  • The completed referral form should then be forwarded to the WCH Hospital School

What happens next?

  • Once approved, a letter will be forwarded to parents informing them that the HTS Coordinator will begin the process of organising an appropriate tutor
  • The HTS coordinator, at the Hospital Education Services, will liaise with parents during this process and throughout the child's involvement with the HTS
